Happy "Niu" Year!

This last week was probably one of the most important weeks in China, it was our Spring Festival or "Chunjie". We are celebrating the beginning of the Chinese Year of the "Ox"! The Joinway Dental team Congratulates all its friend on this new year of the Ox.
For those of you not quite familiar with the Chinese Calendar, here's a brief introduction:

The Chinese calendar is a lunar calendar and it is divided into 12 months of 29 or 30 days (compensating for the lunar month's mean duration of 29 days, 12 hr,

44.05 min).

This calendar is synchronized with the solar year by the addition of extra months at fixed intervals.

The Chinese calendar runs on a 60-year cycle. The cycles 1876-1935 and 1936-95, with the years grouped under their 12 animal designation, along with the first 24 years of the current cycle.

This current cycle began in 1996 and will last until 2055. Feb. 9, 2005, marks the beginning of the year 4703 in the Chinese calendar, and is designated the Year of the Rooster.

In the Chinese calendar, the beginning of the year falls somewhere between late January and early February.
The Chinese have adopted the Western calendar since 1911, but the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions such as the Chinese New Year. Many Chinese calendars will print both the solar dates and the Chinese lunar dates.

The order of the 12 animals on the Chinese Calendar has a very curious origin,
according to the Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever was to reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according
to their finish.

All the twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox's back, and
won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last.
That is why the rat is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last.

The current Chinese Year of the Ox represents and wealth and prosperity, for Ox is a symbol of powerful individuals with unyielding and stubborn personalities.
People born under this sing are natural born leaders who typically succeed when
given the chance . They are upright, inspiring, easy-going and
conservative.

I hope you find this information interesting and leave us some comments with your opinion.

One Apple, Infinite Smiles

Apple is probably the most popular fruit in the world. I'm not the biggest Apple's fan in the world, but from time to time I really enjoy eating some.
It turns out, apple has many different health benefits. Apples reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.

Apples are a naturally fat-free, saturated fat-free, and cholesterol-free food, and are an excellent source of fiber – both soluble (including pectin) and insoluble types. Apple is a fiber rich fruit and fiber lowers cholesterol levels in the blood, so the "bad" LDL cholesterol doesn’t get a chance to clog arteries where it might cause a heart attack or stroke.

Apples are also good for reduce cancer risk and reduces high blood pressure risk.

Apple are usually a part of every healthy diet and weight losing diets. It might be because apples’ fiber fills you up faster, so you eat less and feel fuller for longer.

But what it actually caught my attention is that apple can actually help your dental health.

Crunchy, juicy apples act like nature’s toothbrush, keeping teeth healthy and scrubbing away stains over time. Their rough, fibrous texture and natural tannins, chased with a rinse of water, make them ideal for cleaning and brightening teeth.

Not only apples are good for that matter, but carrots, radish, cucumber, orange, pear, beetroot, watermelon, etc.

Raw foods are also very good natural teeth cleaners, many doctors suggest to eat some raw food after every meals. This will help clean your teeth and gums due to high water content. However, after eating citrus fruits or juices, rinse your mouth with water, as the acids present in them can weaken enamel.

This information was very new and interesting to me. If you know of other healthy foods that can help us get a nicer smile, leave us a comment.

A Little Bit of Dentistry

Since one of the goals of my blog is to introduce you to different topics of dentistry, I think it's just right to introduce you briefly to a new tendency on dentistry, Cosmetic Dentistry.
I'll explain in a few words, the main difference between traditional General Dentistry and Cosmetic Dentistry.

Traditional dentistry focuses mainly on oral hygiene, as well as preventing, diagnosing and treating oral diseases. On the other hand, cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of a person's teeth, mouth and smile.

We could say that restorative, general and family dental practices solve dental problems that require necessary treatments, while cosmetic dentistry provides elective -or desired treatments or services.

Just until a few months ago, I thought people just go to the dentist because they are in pain, or need a filling, a root canal treatment or some other kind of restorative treatment, but since working at Joinway Dental, I've learnt a lot and I've seen how more and more patients are walking into the clinic asking today for cosmetic surgery.

Then I realized that it actually makes sense, people are looking really hard every day to boost their self-steem, people worry about personal appearance now more than a few decades ago.
A beautiful smile, with sparkling white teeth and perfectly healthy mouth can make a very lasting impression on people around us, and can make us all very happy and confident.

So, although we have a very old concept of dentistry, I encourage you all to try some basic procedures so you can feel better and happy and make people around you happy.

If you have tried any kind of cosmetic dental treatment or if you have any information or questions about the topic, you are welcome to leave your comments on our comments section.
