Tooth Extraction (Part I)

Many of us just go to the dentist when in pain, sometimes we are so afraid of the pain that we might feel when we go to the dentist, that we prefer to bare our own toothache or we wait till our cavities start hurting and it’s usually too late.
There are many dental procedures that help fix our cavities or our infections and tooth accidents. But when there’s no other option, most dentists opt to realize a tooth extraction procedure.
Contrary to what most people think, it is not necessarily a painful procedure. With the use of anesthetics and “happy gas”, this can be a completely pain free procedure.
Also contrary to what most people might think, tooth extraction should be first discussed with your dentist, there most be a clear understanding of the details and risks factors. From today I’m creating a series of 3 small posts with some information about tooth extraction that you might find interesting and useful.

Tooth extraction information:
1. After the tooth extraction, the patient must bite the medical gauze or tampon on the wound for at least half an hour. During the next 24 hours, the patient might see some small blood traces on the saliva, this is perfectly normal, and the patient shouldn't worry about it.

2. After a tooth extraction the patient can be an semi-lying position, but is it nor recommended to lie on the flat position. The patient shouldn't take hot shower immediately after the extraction, to avoid bleeding.

3. After the extraction the patient shouldn't eat or drink for at least 2 hours. The patient can however drink liquids or half liquid food. The patient should avoid hard or hot food.

4. The day of the extraction you should not play any violent sport or do any kind of physical labor, you should not drink alcohol, you should not play any kind of musical instrument, you should not suck or rinse your wound.

5.) When the anesthetic's effect disappear, the extraction area might present some discomfort and pain, please consult your doctor about the medication to take. If there's a hot feeling, severe pain, swelling out of the ordinary or bleeding please consult your doctor immediately.

6.) When a tooth is extracted from reasons different than third molar, overcrowded teeth or for orthodontics reason, usually doctors propose to put a provisional implant on the area. And it should be checked approximately 2 months after the procedure.
